MEDICAL SERVICES PROVIDERS
There is a gap in the social services system concerning the availability of certain medical procedures to children both in foster care and others who are in a family crisis. Orthodontic appliances (braces and retainers are considered “cosmetic” and are not covered under the South Carolina Medicare. The initial focus of the Medical Service Providers is the evaluation of the necessity and the seriousness of each case for corrective action. Upon confirmation of necessity action, children are scheduled for medical attention by St. Christopher's professionals. Eye care is very important and children are often left struggling to read and complete school assignments or homework. To fill this gap, medical providors have joined our medical support network to provide examinations and eye glasses where necessary. The procedures described above are expensive and will be undertaken within the constraints of St. Christopher's available funding
Referrals for medical attention comes exclusively through our netwoek of social agencies, such as the AMI Boys of Georgetown, the Department of Social Services, The Georgetown County Board of Disabilities Special Needs, and the caring school nurses, guidance counselors and principals of Georgetown County. Birthright of Georgetown County has recently joined as a referral agency for the young mothers and their children.
The number of medical providers continues to expand as more physicians join us in providing specialized care other agencies are not able to supply to the poor and disenfranchised children in our community.
Dr. Charles Wright oversees this special group of Medical Providers.
